Year of drawings - 14th December 2018

Last night was the all hands at Buffer. I sketched our CEO Joel while he was talking. I find sketching to be a process that helps me listen to what someone is saying. My mind doesn't wonder. This goes double when I'm sketching the person who is talking. I'm concentrating on them so I tend to listen more :D .

Here's the final result:

And here's the process:

As always, I tried to capture the overall shape and unique features. For example, Joel's eye shape is very distinct. His eyebrows are a little thicker. The nose is a little larger but that might be distortion of the camera. I wish I could draw ears and lips better. Ditto for other features but with the lips and ears I still feel a little lost.

Laid down line work over the basic scribbles

Line work on its own. Once again, I'm happy with how my line work is slowly improving. Also, I feel like I really caught the structure of the facial hair

Blocking in colours. It was at this moment that I realised that the neutral position I had tried to capture of Joel looked almost sad. 🤦🏽‍♂️

And the final colorization :) .

Overall I'm happy with the progress I'm making. Given the time constraint that I had on this I'd say it turned out pretty ok. But it's still a long way to go. I'd be happy if I can advance to the level I want to be by April since we are going to our Buffer retreat at that time. I'd love to do live sketches with people at the location.

#Goals 😉
